Will my pointing device become obsolete?
In Addition
Mouse makers are constantly working on new ergonomic designs and trying to come up with new pointing gadgets, but there hasn't been a major revolution in mouse technology in about 20 years, and there isn't likely to be a big change any time soon.

In fact, your mouse is likely to wear out long before it becomes obsolete, and even then, it's an inexpensive item to replace. Still, it's a good idea to keep an eye on the industry because you might find an alternative input device that's more comfortable than the mouse you're using.

The most promising technology seems to be the touch pad, now making its way from the laptop to the desktop. Other than awkward touch screens, the touch pads that sit on your desk are the only true "pointing devices" in the sense that you actually point your finger to move the mouse cursor around. Early users have given them rave reviews, and if they turn out to be reliable, they could gain a considerable share of the pointing-device market.
